DENVER — It’s official: the Colorado Rockies will host this year’s MLB All-Star Game at Coors Field on July 13.

Several media outlets broke the news Monday, and MLB made the announcement Tuesday.

“MLB chose the Rockies because they were already in the bidding process to host a future All-Star Game,” MLB said in the announcement. “The Rockies had supplied a detailed plan for hotel, event space and security that took months to assemble, and MLB staff had already made several site visits to Denver. In addition, Governor Jared Polis and Mayor Michael Hancock have both committed to provide the necessary facilities and services needed to support this year’s festivities.”

The MLB announced Friday that the 2021 All-Star game was being moved out of Atlanta over new voting restrictions in Georgia.

Though the game will no longer take place in Atlanta, MLB said it will still celebrate the memory of Hank Aaron, an Atlanta icon who died on Jan. 22. MLB will also move forward with planned investments to support local communities in Atlanta as part of the All-Star Legacy Projects.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said he expects a fully packed crowd at Coors Field for the game. When asked whether or not COVID-19 restrictions would be a concern, Polis said all adults in Colorado will have a chance to get their first dose of the vaccine by the end of May, which means they will be immune to the virus by late June.

“And of course we’re talking about a mid-July game. So there are really no concerns from that front,” Polis said. “Everybody will have been able to be vaccinated by then. The state is pulling back on restrictions in mid-April.”

“I think everybody expects a fully-packed, sellout stadium in July, and that’s going to be good for Major League Baseball, good for Colorado, and an exciting experience for fans,” Polis said.

“We are excited to host this year’s All-Star festivities at Coors Field,” Rockies Chief Operating Officer Greg Feasel said in the announcement. “We are confident that our organization along with the city, state, VISIT DENVER and the Denver Sports Commission are capable of putting on this premier event in a relatively quick time frame because of the preparations that had already been done. Summer in Colorado is something everyone in the country should experience, and we embrace this opportunity to show off our beautiful ballpark and everything our city, state and region have to offer.”

The game will be broadcast on FOX21.

Coors Field hosted its first, and so far only, All-Star Game in 1998.

The 2022 game is set for Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
