Colorado Springs celebrates Rio Olympics downtown

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Olympic City USA is a title Mayor John Suthers says Colorado Springs earned over 40 years ago.

“It’s who we are, we’re really the epicenter of the Olympic movement,” Suthers said.

Downtown was full of people showing support for Team USA Friday.

“As long as I can remember, [I] watched all my life. Every Olympics, summer and winter,” said Yvette Burney, who was enjoying the celebration.

The streets were full of entertainment like games and activities for kids.

“I love all the athleticism in the city, just the excitement of the Olympic team being here training, that’s kinda fun,” Burney said.

However, with all the excitement, fans are making sure they don’t miss their favorite competitions.

“I wanna see Phelps win some more medals for swimming too,” said Dan Burney, who was there with his wife.

“I love the gymnastics and I like the swimming,” Burney said.

“Outside of Rio, this is probably gonna be the best Olympic party in the world,” Suthers said.
