It’s not exactly unusual to struggle when it comes to falling asleep.
One doctor in Arizona claims that his breathing exercise will have you falling asleep in just 60 seconds.
Dr. Andrew Weil calls it the “4-7-8 Breathing Exercise,” and he says it comes from yoga.
The sleep remedy is described as a “natural tranquilizer for the nervous system.”
“The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise is utterly simple, takes almost no time, requires no equipment and can be done anywhere,” Dr. Andrew Weil wrote on his YouTube video.
You can do this exercise in any position, Weil says in his instructive YouTube video.
To practice the breathing technique, Weil suggests you place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth.
Next, Weil says to breath in through your nose, quietly, and then blow air out through your mouth forcefully, making a “whoosh” sound.
Then, close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
After that, Weil says to hold your breath for a count of seven and then exhale completely through your mouth, making the “whoosh” sound to a count of eight.
Next, Weil says to inhale again and then repeat the cycle three times for a total of four breaths.
“This extra oxygen can have a relaxing effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of calmness,” according to Daily Mail.
