COLORADO SPRINGS — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash near downtown Colorado Springs Wednesday evening, according to police.
The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Harold Mackey III.
The driver has been identified as 29-year-old Tyler J. Stewart who turned himself into authorities on Tuesday.
The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. on South Nevada Avenue near the Interstate 25 interchange. Police said the pedestrian was crossing Nevada Avenue, not on a designated crosswalk, when he was hit by Stewart in a blue Dodge Durango that was headed southbound.
Mr. Mackey died on the scene.
Stewart is facing one count of Hit and Run Causing Death (a Class 3 Felony) and Duty to Report an Accident (a misdemeanor).
Police said this is the 39th traffic-related death in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year, there were 46.
