Builders face off against first responders in charity hockey game

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs HBA Cares builders and tradesmen took to the ice Friday to battle police officers and firefighters in a hockey game to benefit Shield 616.

HBA Cares is the philanthropic arm of the Housing & Building Association of Colorado Springs. Their mission is to connect community needs to the industry's resources.

"We have a lot of hearts and a lot of great givers in our organization itself and in our community, so we just thought 'let's have a fun family live-action event on Friday and battle it out on the ice,'" HBA Cares board member Tiffany Canady said.

"I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we're lucky to work in and live in a community that's very supportive of our first responders, and we don't take that for granted," Colorado Springs police officer Mike Walker said. "We recognize it every day. And thank you from all of us."

Though a friendly matchup, the competition was fierce. First responders were up 2-1 after the first period, but HBA Cares took home the trophy.
