SOUTHERN COLORADO -- With all of the wildfires in Colorado this year, many are wondering how to protect their home in case of a fire.

Temperatures are supposed to stay high for a while, meaning new fires could start naturally. In Larimer County, a wildfire has torched nearly 100 square miles and has destroyed almost 200 homes.

Two other fires in Colorado have also reached more than 1,000 acres.

We can't control the path of a fire, but there are some things we can do that might be able to control whether or not that fire completely destroys your house," Cally O'Donnell with Allstate Insurance Agency said.

O'Donnell recommends videotaping everything in the home, especially belongings because they can otherwise be more difficult to replace than the home itself.

"You can do that so easily," O'Donnell said. "The video or cell phone on your camera, video is nice because you can just walk through room by room and just pan that room."

When closing on a home, many of the improvements you've made aren't included.

"So the house had linoleum and you put in hard wood, or it had laminate counter tops, and you put in granite," O'Donnell said.

Fire conditions won't subside any time soon.

"If you've had a home you didn't have insured, it can't be written at that point in time, so do it now," O'Donnell said.
