COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Colorado Springs Police Department is urging residents to stay off the road after conditions quickly deteriorated with the snow Wednesday evening.

Officials said snowplows are unable to keep up with the rapid rate of snowfall in the region.

Police identified the following intersections as serious areas with poor conditions:
- Woodmen and Union - Impassible without 4WD
- Oro Blanco/N Carefree - slick conditions/accident location
- Fountain/Alvarado - slick conditions, disabled semi trailer
- Rio Grande/8th Street and Moreno Street west from 8th street - icy, barely passable
- Pikes Peak/Murray area - icy, traffic accident car versus house
- Union/Vickers - 6 car traffic accident, police cruisers on scene are unable to move due to ice

According to police, anyone involved in a crash is urged to keep their seatbelt on in case of being struck by another vehicle. Once outside of the vehicle, it is recommended to stay away from the road until authorities arrive.

Wednesday evening, the Colorado Springs Police Department went into 'Accident Alert' status meaning cold reporting is in effect unless the wreck involved injuries or there is suspicion of drugs or alcohol.

Falcon police is on 'Cold Alert' status, the department said.

City crews along with crews from the Colorado Department of Transportation have been working to clear the streets and highways since Wednesday afternoon. According to CDOT, 300 plows are working 12-hour shifts throughout the state.
