COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Two people were found dead inside a Colorado Springs home on Monday afternoon after police responded to a 'shots fired' call.
David Dunlap, 37, and Whitney Butler, 35, were both found dead inside the home. Dunlap was a Fort Carson soldier.
An autopsy revealed the cause of death for both to be gunshot wounds, police said.
Police responded to a home in the 200 block of Bassett Drive early Monday afternoon on a call of 'shots fired.' Police said the two victims received 'obvious trauma.'
The investigation revealed that a burglary was in progress at the home, when the victims returned to the home and encountered one suspect.
The suspect shot both victims and fled the scene, police said.
A person of interest is being questioned at this time.
The incident prompted the lockdown of three schools as a precaution: Rogers Elementary School, Tesla Education Opportunity Center and STAR Academy, according to school officials. The lockdowns have since been lifted.
Investigation continues, police said.
