COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- We're getting a more detailed look at how voters in El Paso County feel about Amendment 64.

The Clerk and Recorder's office this week released a set of maps breaking down how each precinct in the county voted.

The strongest support for Amendment 64 and regulating marijuana like alcohol was in Manitou Springs, Old Colorado City, and "The Old North End". More than 70% of those populations voted "Yes".

Those against were most concentrated in Monument, Black Forest and Northgate with 70% of the populations against the amendment.

County Clerk and Recorder Wayne Williams said this information could be useful in determining where recreational marijuana stores should be allowed to set up shop.

Many wondered what zoning regulations could apply to these stores and if they would even work.

Candace Lopez, a mother who voted in favor of the amendment said, "Personally I don't want it around my kids but if it is going to benefit the schools, then it's really a hard decision on where to put them."

She explained that even if zoning regulations were in place, she's not so sure it would serve the purpose of protecting her children.

"That doesn't stop the people smoking it," she said, "If you're smoking it across the street from my kid then it's not gonna make a difference if you're selling it across the street from my kid!"

City Councilman Tim Leigh said whether you're for or against the measure, it's demand that will drive the drug's property placement.

"The market's going to decide where those facilites are going to go," he said, "and they'll either be successful or they'll not be successful based on consumption patterns. Not on the voters living nearby."

While they aren't making decisions just yet, Leigh added that in the commerce of cannabis some regulations certainly still need to be hammered out and talked about.

"Is marijuana in a retail trade area? So could it go in a shopping center for example? Is it liquor-like? Is it clothing-like?", he wondered, "I mean good grief! There are a lot of philosophical discussions we need to have before we can start enforcing ordinances."

With a highly-debated subject such as this making decisions should prove interesting for lawmakers.

"I think it will be very entertaining to hear everyone's viewpoint and to try to come to some rational conclusion that makes sense for the entire city," Leigh said.
