COLORADO -- It appears as though, even for only a few days, Old Man Winter has replaced Colorado's prolonged summer.

The National Weather Service issued freeze warnings for northeastern Colorado after snow fell in the Denver area and at the city's airport.

Weather officials said the northeast corner of the state could see up to four inches of snow by Saturday from a storm that has moved through Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas and is now threatening Kansas and Oklahoma as well.

The high temperature in Denver Friday is projected at 45 degrees.

Meanwhile, the southeastern part of the state from Monument down to Trinidad and east into Kansas is under a freeze watch, as temperatures are not expected to get beyond the 50s until at least Sunday.

Light snow fell in Monument Friday morning.

No roads have been closed because of the snow, but several roads in the Denver area remain slick Friday. Areas west and northwest of Denver such as Golden and Boulder experienced fog.

The first week of October is the average time for the first freeze of the season in both Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

Colorado had the hottest summer on record in 2012, which was a big reason for several dozen wildfires throughout the state. A statewide warm-up is expected early next week.
