COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A burnt shell is all that's left of the 60-year-old Flying W Ranch after the Waldo Canyon Fire ripped through the property.
Only two buildings on the ranch remain: the teepee and Marian's Cooking Library.
During a tour of the land Tuesday, Sales and promotions Manager Aaron Winter said he and several of the 100 employees didn't think the property would burn.
There was a large group of employees at the cattle ranch June 23 prepping for a wedding, the same day the fire started.
So after collecting several antiquities, they went back to work. No one could have suspected their Colorado Springs landmark would go up in flames June 26.
Of the two remaining buildings, many think Flying W founder Russ Wolfe's wife Marian protected her namesake.
Not a single one of her 2,000 plus cookbooks are damaged.
The same can't be said for the rest of the buildings that are burnt to the ground.
"This is about opportunity and taking what God throw's your way," Winter said.
Moving on and moving forward means the ranch is focused on preserving the history of the property.
One option is to rebuild, which could take 1-2 years. They're not working on the property until HazMat and safety precautions have all been completed.
"We have a really big issue with erosion. That whole back mountain is burnt," Winter said.
The second option is to turn the property into a museum honoring the Colorado Springs landmark.
