ASPEN, COLO. (AP) -- Frozen cow carcasses found near Conundrum Hot Springs in western Colorado appear not to have caused water contamination at the popular destination.

The U.S. Forest Service says that water-quality tests at the pool and stream near Aspen showed the water is safe for recreation.

The Aspen Times reported Wednesday that the water did fail standards for drinking water.

In May, Forest Service crews cut up 12 dead cows that were found frozen near the springs and inside a nearby cabin. Rangers believe the cows wandered into the cabin during a snowstorm but couldn't find their way out.

No additional cow carcasses have been found since May 3, though the rancher who owned them reported 29 cattle missing. It's unknown where the other 17 ended up.
