COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The ongoing drought will likely impact your watering routine this spring and summer.

Colorado Springs Utilities said it may implement watering restrictions this year.

Nothing has been officially decided, and proposals would have to be approved by the utilities board.

"Last year was an extremely dry year in the mountains, so our yield coming into this season is about 30% of our average," Abby Ortega with Colorado Springs Utilities said.

Dry weather and drought are nothing new to Southern Colorado, but Ortega said last year our storage carried us through the warm spring and hot summer months.

"For Colorado Springs we are looking at the Independence Pass Watershed above Buena Vista, also near Leadville from the Homestake Watershed, and another on Hoosier Pass," Ortega said.

In those areas she said the snowpack is sitting at only 40%, and lower snowpack equals lower reservoir levels.

"We need to do something to regulate that draw in our reservoirs this year, so we are looking at some form of mandatory watering restrictions," Ortega said.

If enacted, the restrictions would not be new for many residents of Colorado Springs, who were placed under mandatory restrictions in 2002.

Those lasted three years, until 2005.

Ortega said her office is likely going to propose a three day per week watering restriction, but she said if things do not improve residents may be limited to just two or even one day.

"Like Monday, Wednesday and Saturday the odd number houses would water, and then Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday the even addresses water," Ortega said. "Then commercial has some time in there as well."

A final decision is expected in March.
