COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Careless smoking was deemed the cause of a house fire that left a Springs family displaced Thursday afternoon, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
The fire happened at about 4:40 p.m., in the 3000 block of East Whileaway Circle, near Academy Boulevard and South Carefree.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes of the first call and found flames coming from both the front and back side of the home. The fire in the main body of the home was knocked down within 10 minutes, officials said.
The family who lived in the home was not there at the time of the fire and a neighbor called 911 when they saw smoke coming from the home.
No injuries were reported however officials said the family of five, including two adults and three children, will be displaced. The American Red Cross and the Fire Department's 'After the Fire' program are working with the family,
Offiicials estimated the loss in the fire to be about $171,296. More than $65,000 was saved, officials said.
