COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A 27-year-old woman was arrested on a charge of Vehicular Homicide following a crash last weekend.
Ashley Brooks, 27, was also charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving a Vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.08 or Greater and Careless Driving.
On Sunday, Jan. 13 at about 1:26 a.m., police said a 2006 Mazda 3 sedan was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 when it went onto the narrow eastern shoulder.
As the driver, Brooks, attempted to bring the car into the correct lane, the vehicle started rotating clockwise, police said. It continued to rotate across the southbound lanes of I-25 before going off the western side of the road, police said.
The car, according to police, traveled across a grassy median from the on-ramp at Baptist Road before overturning. Police said the car continued to overturn as it traveled across the on ramp and traveled off the western edge of the ramp and down an embankment before coming to a rest on its wheels. The car was facing north.
Brooks sustained serious injures but was wearing her seat belt, police said. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Passenger Katherine Banzhaf, 26, of Colorado Springs died from the crash.
Bond for Brooks was set at $10,000.
