DENVER -- The flag of the Colorado Rapids soccer team will fly over the state Capitol Tuesday as Denver celebrates its first MLS championship.
Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter ordered the Rapids flag to be flown after the team defeated FC Dallas 2-1 on Sunday to win the MLS Cup. The Rapids trailed 1-0 at halftime, but Conor Casey tied the game by kicking in a goal after a scrum in front of the net halfway through the second half.
In the second half of overtime, Rapids reserve Macoumba Kandji took a shot from the right side of the box that went off an FC Dallas defender and into the net, proving to be the winner.
Colorado held off a ferocious FC Dallas rally after the go ahead goal to win the franchise's first title in its first championship appearance.
Fans of the team greeted players on Monday when they returned to Colorado from Toronto, where the final was played.
