NEW YORK (AP) -- The U.S. Open women's semifinals are being played this afternoon in New York.
Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic is facing fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia in the opener.
Fourth-seeded American Serena Williams is up next. She'll continue her quest for a third U.S. Open crown when she squares off against Dinara Safina.
The sixth-seeded Russian has been playing the best tennis of her career of late, but Williams has been the most dominant player at Flushing Meadows, having dropped just 26 games through five matches. And 12 of those came in a quarterfinals win over her older sister Venus, who was the only other Grand Slam title winner remaining in the ladies field.
The women's semis were preceded by the men's double final, won by Americans Bob and Mike Bryan. The brothers defeated Lukas Dlouhy (deh-LOO'-ee) of the Czech Republic and India's Leander Paes (lee-AN'-dur payz) 7-6, 7-6 in today's final in New York.
