DENVER -- Denver Broncos linebacker Joe Mays is getting suspended for one game and fined $50,000 for his hit on Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub on Sunday.
Mays was involved in a helmet-to-helmet hit with Schaub that caused the quarterback's helmet to come off and tore off a piece of his ear.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Mays will appeal both the suspension and fine.
Mays said in a radio interview that his "...intention was to go in there and get a hit on him, not hit him in the helmet. Unfortunately, that’s what happened.”
Apart from the ear, Schaub did not receive any additional injuries.
