Denver upsets UNC 16-14 in NCAA lacrosse tourney

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Mark Matthews scored five goals and Jeremy Noble had three goals and seven assists to help Denver upset eighth-seeded North Carolina 16-14 on Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA men's lacrosse tournament.

Wes Berg added three goals and two assists, while Alex Dempoulous and Eric Law scored two goals apiece for the Pioneers (9-6). They won 23 of 31 face-offs in advancing to face top-seeded Loyola next weekend in the quarterfinals.

Noble's goal with 3:39 left in the third period made it 13-12 and put Denver ahead to stay. The Pioneers led 15-12 on Dempoulous' goal with 7:17 left before the Tar Heels rallied. Chad Tutton scored with 48 seconds left to pull the Tar Heels to 15-14.

Marcus Holman had six goals for North Carolina (11-6).
