DENVER (AP) -- Denver scored three times in the final 3:17 of the first period and cruised to a 5-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Alaska-Anchorage on Saturday.

Chris Crowell had given the Seawolves (7-12-3, 6-10-2) a 1-0 lead early in the first period. But Jarrod Mermis answered for the WCHA-leading Pioneers (16-5-5, 12-3-3) at 16:43 of the first and the floodgates opened. Anthony Maiani and Beau Bennett followed for a 3-1 Denver lead after one period.

Kyle Ostrow and Jason Zucker added a goal and assist each for Denver.

Pioneers goalie Sam Brittain made 28 saves as Denver maintained its one-point lead over North Dakota and Minnesota-Duluth in the WCHA standings.

Rob Gunderson had 27 saves for Alaska-Anchorage.
