SAN ANTONIO -- Air Force baseball (0-3) dropped both games of a doubleheader to UTSA (3-0) Saturday at Roadrunner Field. The Roadrunners won game one 6-1 and game two 13-8.
In game one, a five-run fourth inning lifted UTSA to the 6-1 win. After the Falcons plated a run in the top of the inning, the Roadrunners responded with the five runs in the bottom of the inning. UTSA tacked on a additional run in the seventh.
Falcon starting pitcher and Texas-native Ben Bertelson (Midland) was tagged with the loss. The senior lefty struck out nine in five innings, allowing five runs, just two earned. Three of four Falcon relievers made their collegiate debuts. Freshmen Trent Monaghan, Brady Weaver and sophomore Dillon Freeman saw their first-career action for AFA. Jack Hourin also had a scoreless relief outing for the Falcons.
Air Force had 10 hits in game one, led by junior centerfielder David Baska and senior rightfielder Garrett Custons. Baska went 3-for-4 and Custons went 2-for-4 with a double. Junior firstbaseman Seth Kline scored AFA’s lone run. Freshman Coleman Poje also made his debut for the Falcons as a pinch runner.
UTSA reliever Wesley Cox picked up the win in relief. Starting pitcher Brock Hartson went 4.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out one.
UTSA had 15 hits in game one with shortstop R.J. Perucki going 4-for-5.
In game two, the Roadrunners used a pair of big innings to pull away from the Falcons in the 13-8 win. UTSA scored four in the first and seven in the fourth to run away with the win.
Trailing 11-2, the Falcons responded with five unanswsered runs, scoring three in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull to within five at 11-7. UTSA tacked on two more runs however to pull away.
Falcon starting pitcher and Texas native Alex Baker (McKinney) took the loss, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out four. Seniors Todd Del Toro, and Jack Hourin and sophomore Ben Yokley closed out the game in relief.
Air Force had 12 hits in game two, led by Custons and sophomore designated hitter Brian Sicher. Custons went 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, two hit-by-pitches and an RBI. Sicher went 3-for-5.
Custons was AFA’s most productive hitter on the day, going 5-for-7, reaching base seven times in nine plate appearances.
Douglas Sefcik picked up the win in relief for UTSA. Starting pitcher Clint Sharp went four innings, allowing five runs.
UTSA had 16 hits in game two, with catcher John Bormann, going 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs.
The series finale is tomorrow at 1 p.m. CST.
