PEYTON, COLO. -- The American Red Cross is honoring some hometown heroes.

People and organizations who exemplify courage, kindness and unselfish character.

On October 24, 2012 11-year-old Sara Anderson and her brother, eight-year-old Scott, and their mother Pam were riding their horses in Peyton when Pam's horse became spooked and knocked her to the ground.

"My horse freaked out, and I lost the reigns and he took off," Pam said. "I remember looking down, I could see the reign and the saddle horn and I thought to myself 'I am going to fall off of here.'"

"The horse was spinning and mom fell off," Sara said.

Pam was knocked unconscious in the fall. Without hesitation, Sara took action.

"I told Scott to stay with mom, and then I went to the house and called my dad, a family friend and then 9-1-1," Sara said.

"I kept telling her where our dad was, she kept asking," Scott said.

"The kids were very mature, and when Sara made her 9-1-1 call she was very textbook perfect," Pam said.

Pam's injuries were serious. She bruised a lung, broke five ribs, her collar bone and her wrist in the fall.

"I do not really remember a whole lot, I remember the paramedic rolling me over, and they had to cut my clothes and put me on a board," Pam said.

She was rushed to Memorial Hospital where she stayed for a week, and even though most of the details remain fuzzy, Pam said her kids acted courageously.

"I just kind of did what my instincts told me to do," Scott said.

"I am just very proud, very proud of my kids," Pam said.

The Hometown Heroes will receive their awards March 21 at the Antler's Hilton.
