ENGLEWOOD, COLO. (AP) -- The Denver Broncos have hired Derius Swinton as assistant special teams coach to replace Keith Burns.

The 27-year-old Swinton is entering his fifth season in the NFL. He served as a special teams quality control coach for Kansas City last season after three years in the same role with the St. Louis Rams.

Swinton played free safety at Hampton University from 2003-06, then began his coaching career as a defensive graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee from 2007-08.

Burns was hired as the Washington Redskins' special teams coordinator this week after six seasons as Denver's assistant special teams coach. Burns spent 11 of his 13 seasons as a standout special teams player with the Broncos, including 10 seasons under current Redskins coach Mike Shanahan.
