BOULDER, COLO. (AP) -- Colorado Buffaloes standout receiver Paul Richardson will miss the 2012 season because of a torn ACL.

The team announced Tuesday that Richardson suffered the injury in practice Monday when he planted to make a turn during a noncontact special teams drill. He will have surgery once the swelling goes down.

The junior from Gardena, Calif., intends to use his redshirt season to fully recover from the knee injury.

Richardson had 39 catches for 555 yards and five TDs last season despite missing four games with a sprained knee. His biggest game was in a 36-33 overtime loss to California, when he set a school mark with 284 yards receiving.

Colorado coach Jon Embree said that Richardson was "obviously disappointed, but he is in great spirits."
