GOLDEN – Nobody’s better at digging holes than an Oredigger.

The Colorado School of Mines put the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs behind big early and led wire-to-wire in a 67-46 victory over the Mountain Lions Friday evening.

Freshman Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored a career-high 15 points to lead UCCS (11-17, 5-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Emily Jenkins and Alex Pitts each added seven points, while Jenkins grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Emily Dalton led Mines (12-14, 7-9 RMAC) with 16 points, while Peanut Eickelman added 10 points and seven assists.

An active Oredigger defense and cold UCCS shooting in its first game ever at Mines’ Lockridge Arena led to an 0-for-11 start from the field for the Mountain Lions. It also meant that it took the Mountain Lions nearly 10 minutes to score their first field goal, a heavily-contested layup by Alex Pitts. They didn’t get their second, a Lauren Holm 3-pointer, until 12:14 had expired.

As a result, the Orediggers surged to a 9-1 lead.  They then followed a Jenkins free throw with a 9-0 run.

Down 18-2, the Mountain Lions managed an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to 23-13 with 5:05 left in the half. The momentum was short-lived, though, as Mines scored seven straight and went to the intermission with a 36-22 lead.

UCCS shot a painful 17.9 percent in the first half.

Despite that, the Mountain Lions scored the first six points of the second half, four by Jenkins, to close to within eight. That was as close as they would get.

Julie Marshall hit a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 12-0 Oredigger run. After a Holm layup, Mines got a 7-0 run, five of which were scored by Dalton.
