COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Fire Department investigators have ruled Thursday afternoon’s fire at Red Rock Canyon accidental.
Fire officials said the fire was started by a model rocket.
At about 4:15 p.m., crews responded to the grass fire, located in the Red Rock Canyon Open Space. Because of windy and warm weather conditions, authorities requested additional resources.
Firefighters were able to access the fire but part of it was burning on a ridge in the grass and shrubs.
The fire was contained and under control within two hours, officials said. Fortunately, it did not threaten any structures.
Officials said the fire burned about five acres.
Fire investigators were called to the scene to collect evidence and analyze the area. This, after crews found a model rocket.
Model rocket launches are allowed, in accordance with the 2009 International Fire Code. Although the City is not under any fire restrictions or burn bans, a special permit is required for groups wanting to launch model rockets.
