DENVER (AP) -- Background checks for private gun purchases are poised for a final debate in the Colorado Legislature.

Ruling Democrats squashed a GOP attempt Thursday to extend the debate on a bill to require background checks on private and online gun sales. That means the bill could face a final debate in both chambers Friday before heading to the governor's desk.

The bill was changed slightly Thursday to clarify language about corporations and loaning guns to relatives. The proposal has already passed the House and Senate, but in slightly different forms.

The background check bill is one of the biggest pieces of gun-control legislation still pending. A limit on ammunition magazines has cleared the Legislature and awaits the governor's signature.
