A small fire Tuesday morning at Evans Elementary School forced its evacuation, according to District 49 officials.

The fire was in the north wing of the school, located in the 1600 block of Winnebago Road, near Palmer Park Boulevard and Peterson Road.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, a student is responsible for the fire. Authorities said it started in the boy's bathroom when a toilet paper dispenser was lit on fire. The boy is not of age and therefore will not face charges.

"This young man is under the minimum age in the state of Colorado where you can be charged with a crime. So there will be no criminal charges pursued here," Lt. Jeff Kramer, with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, said.

Had he been of age, he would have been charged with arson, a felony.

Though he isn't facing any criminal charges the school can still decide to punish him.

Students were taken to the field house at Sand Creek High School where they were picked up by parents or guardians.

Nearly 700 students had to be transported.

"They did well. I mean it was obviously chilly and most of them didn't have their coats, but we couldn't go back into the building and it's better not to have a coat and be a little cold than the alternative which was being in a dangerous situation," Dustin Horras, Principal at Evans Elementary, said.

School is canceled Wednesday because of smoke damages, officials said.
