AIR FORCE ACADEMY, COLO. (AP) -- At the 2013 United States Fencing Association's Junior Olympics in Baltimore, Md., this past weekend, Air Force fencer Alex Chiang finished 29th among 198 in the junior men’s foil competition.  James Salem competed in the junior men’s epee championships and finished 51st of 220 competitors, while Madeleine Girardot finished in 54th in junior women’s foil.

The Falcons’ highlight of the weekend was Mary McElwee, who finished in fifth place in women’s foil.

On Friday, Salem came within a single touch of beating the #3 post-pools seed in the crowded epee event. Salem fell to Brian Ro of Columbia in a nail biter early on Friday. On Monday, Chiang placed in the highly competitive tableau of 32 at the four-day national event.  Girardot ran into a tough newcomer in her first direct elimination, while McElwee almost lost her first direct elimination.

On Feb. 23, the fencers will compete in a collegiate meet at the Notre Dame Duals inside the Castellan Family Fencing Center.
