COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The El Paso County Commisioners unanimously adopted on Tuesday a resolution in defense of the 2nd Amendment.

The resolution urges lawmakers to defend 2nd Amendment rights and to reject proposed laws and international treaties that would infringe on the right to bear arms. The resolution claims that there is no persuasive evidence that gun control laws reduce crime. It also claims that statistics show lawful gun owners are less likely to break the law than the average member of the public.

Supportive comments were given by the entire board after the resolution was read.

“The resolution takes a strong stand on what we will do here to protect the rights of the citizens of El Paso County," Commissioner Peggy Littleton said.  "It spells out that El Paso County 'will uphold the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, and will act in conformity with our sworn duties as duly elected officials charged with public trust, and will, in conjunction with prior decisions by the United States Supreme Court, not enforce any statutes, edicts, Presidential Directives, or other regulations and proclamations which conflict—and are expressly preempted by—the U.S. Supreme Court’s rulings.”

Other residents also voiced their support for the resolution.
