COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) -- A police officer who shot and killed a captured dog in suburban Denver has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.
Adams County District Attorney Don Quick announced the charge against Commerce City officer Robert Price on Thursday following a three-week investigation.
Price shot the 3-year-old pit bull as it was being restrained with a catch pole noose by an animal control officer on Nov. 24. At the time, police said Price was unable to find the person responsible for the dog and that the dog remained agitated and uncontrolled.
The police department asked the district attorney to conduct an independent investigation. Investigators interviewed neighbors and reviewed a video of the shooting as part of the probe.
City officials say Price has been placed on administrative leave.
