COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Police have identified the mother of a baby that was reportedly found near a dumpster Wednesday afternoon.
The mother of the newborn girl has been identified as a 17-year-old. The infant was between six and 12 hours old when Colorado Springs Police were first called to the Rosemont at Shadow Mountain apartment complex near Garden of the Gods and Nevada.
After interviewing several people, police learned that the baby's mother told someone she found the baby, and that person called police.
Officials revealed that the newborn never was in or near the dumpster, as first reported. The baby was never in any harm, and was taken to Memorial Hospital in stable condition. She has since been placed in protective custody with DHS.
Police said they are looking at charging the teen with a misdemeanor charge of false reporting, or a felony charge of influencing a public official.
