ENGLEWOOD, COLO. (AP) -- The Denver Broncos placed defensive end Jeremy Beal on injured reserve with a torn ligament in his left knee Friday as they began whittling their roster to the 53-man maximum.

Beal had two sacks and five tackles in the preseason before getting hurt in the Broncos' final exhibition game Thursday night at Arizona.

The Broncos selected Beal in the seventh round of the 2011 draft out of Oklahoma, where he set a school record with 10 career forced fumbles and finished with the most pass breakups (14) by a defensive lineman in Sooners history.

He spent his rookie season on the Broncos' practice squad last season.

With linebacker D.J. Williams and tight end Virgil Green headed to the suspended list, the Broncos have to cut 19 players Friday.
