LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The biggest come-from-behind, seventh-inning rally in University of Colorado at Colorado Springs history lifted the Mountain Lions to a 10-8 win over New Mexico Highlands in Sunday’s opener and a doubleheader sweep of the Cowgirls.

And as if to prove the first one wasn’t a fluke, the Mountain Lions overcame another deficit in the nightcap before winning 8-7 thanks to Rachel Hancock’s three-run homer in the 10th inning.

Down 7-3 going into the final inning of the opener, UCCS (10-5, 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) rallied for seven runs on nine hits, including a mammoth three-run home run by Tasha Pagdilao that tied the game.

Stacy Haney, Sarah Cleland and Amanda Hathaway each got hits to start the inning, with Hathaway’s single bringing home Haney. Pagdilao, who had been 1-for-7 to that point in the series, hit a 250-foot blast to center field that tied the score at seven.

It would have been an impressive comeback had it ended there, but the Mountain Lions found a little more in the tank with two outs. With Holly Jordan on second with a double, Hancock gave UCCS its first lead of the game with a run-scoring single. Amanda Hathaway, Haney and Cleland followed with consecutive singles to cap the frame.

Dominique Gonzalez (4-5) frustrated the Mountain Lions for six innings with an assortment of breaking pitches and precise location. Of the 18 outs recorded to that point, five were groundouts, six were infield popups and three were strikeouts.

Sarah McCauley (4-2) allowed an unearned run on five hits over four innings of relief to earn the win in the opener. Jordan (3-0) also got the win in relief in Game 2, allowing two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

UCCS was trailing 5-3 going into the top of the sixth inning in the second game when two infield singles and a walk loaded the bases for Sarah Brisky. Her single up the middle tied the game.

After two scoreless extra innings, Hancock pounded a two-out homer to left.

Highlands countered with a two-run shot by Diana Di Matteo in the bottom half of the inning, but Jordan struck out pinch hitter Demetria Dale and Pam Apodaca lined out to left to end the game.

Highlands starter Karlee Trione made the 9.13 ERA she was sporting coming into the game look deceptive. After allowing three runs in the second, she retired 10 of the next 11 batters before Brisky’s RBI single in the sixth. All eight runs she allowed were earned.

Both UCCS starters struggled. Libby White struggled allowed seven runs on 10 hits in three innings of work in the opener. Stacy Ortiz was tagged for five runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings in Game 2.
