DENVER -- Civil unions for gay couples are one step closer to becoming reality in the state of Colorado.

The bill, which grants rights to gay couples similar to a marriage, was approved by the Finance Committee on Wednesday by a 7-6 party-line vote. Republicans were opposed.

Another committee will now vote on the bill before hitting the full House next week. The bill is expected to pass as the Democrats have the votes.

If passed, the bill would move to Gov. John Hickenlooper's desk. He is expected to sign the bill, sources said.

Colorado Democrats say public opinion on gay rights has changed in Colorado while the Republicans claim the bill violates the same-sex marriage ban of 2006 approved by voters.

Democrats also say civil unions do not equal marriage equality.
