COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Five local law enforcement officers from the region were nominated for the Ken Jordan Award, honoring excellence in DUI enforcement.

Fort Carson Police Officer Paul Engenbretson, Fort Carson Military Police Specialist Spencer Rozell, Colorado Springs Police Officer Justin Keown, Colorado State Patrol Trooper JJ Wolff, Fountain Police Sergeant Bryan Widner were all nominated.

Officer Justin Keown was the winner of this year's award.

"Being nominated was a huge honor," said Keown. "I actually knew Ken Jordan so I understand what they're talking about when they say he's a great person. So to get nominated was an honor in and of itself. Winning it was not even an expectation really. Last year I helped implement training to better prepare officers or increase their profficiency or effectiveness in DUI enforcement."

The award is given in memory of officer Ken Jordan, who was killed during a routine traffic stop on December 4, 2006 in Colorado Springs.

"I honestly look at DUI enforcement as homicide prevention, I really do. I think every time we stop someone from driving drunk or get them as quickly as possible, we prevent serious injury and deaths. I mean, that is what drives me is that I think I can prevent that. I can keep my family safe. I can keep everybody else's family safe by stopping people from doing those things."
