DENVER (AP) -- An Army study says the Fort Carson region could gain up to 4,100 military and civilian jobs or lose up to 11,000 as the service downsizes over the next few years.

With the U.S. presence in Afghanistan and Iraq winding down, the Army expects to reduce total troop strength by 72,000 by fiscal 2020.

Some posts could grow if troops are shifted from one site to another.

The study looks at the possible impacts on the environment, population and economy at Fort Carson and 20 other posts. The Fort Carson study includes El Paso, Pueblo and Fremont counties.

The job estimates include people who work for the Army and others who work for companies whose business is generated by the Army.

The public can comment on it until Feb. 19.
