PUEBLO, COLO. -- A Monday afternoon fire destroyed a home and left a family displaced.
The fire, located in the 1300 block of Tampico in the Salt Creek area, was first reported at about 3:30 Monday afternoon.
The Pueblo Rural Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. Officials said they believe the home was a complete loss. The family of three was not inside the house at the time of the fire.
Preliminary investigation, according to officials, hints the fire was possibly started by a wood burning stove on the south wall of the house.
Many roads in the area were closed during the fire to allow firefighters better access and injury prevention.
The family is being assisted by victim advocate group ACOVA.
Officials said on the initial 911 call, no one was on the line. The communications officer was able to reach the caller to determine there was a fire.
“The 911 center receives dozens of 911 hang up calls from cell phones daily but they call back and call back because sometimes, like in this case, they reach someone who is involved in a domestic violence dispute, assault, fire, or other in progress call," Sheriff Kirk M. Taylor said. "This is a perfect example of how these Communications Officers know how important each call can be.”
