Smoke may be emanating from a Pueblo structure for several days.
The Pueblo Fire Department says it’s not the structure itself that is burning at the Alpha Beta/Ice House, because it is mostly concrete, masonry and steel. But the building is insulated with very thick natural cork. It seems the fire is traveling from room to room behind the corkboards, and is totally concealed in many areas.
The fire broke out Sunday night at the building on South Santa Fe Avenue, and has proven to be dangerous for firefighters. The cork from the walls and the ceilings have collapsed, and now there is also tons of water that has turned to ice.
It is believed that the structure is stable, but it is not safe for interior firefighting operations, according to fire department personnel. One firefighter sustained minor injuries from a fall on the Sunday, and was released from the hospital the same day.
Most of the damage is to the cork insulation. The fire department continues to monitor the situation and ask people to stay clear of the facility.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. If anyone has any information about the fire, they are asked to call Pueblo CrimeStoppers at 542-STOP (7867).
