A newborn girl has been found near a trash can in a Colorado Springs apartment complex.

Colorado Springs police said the infant was found around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, wrapped in a hospital gown at Rosemont at Shadow Mountain.

It is unclear if the baby was found in or near the dumpster at the apartment complex, which is a few blocks south of University Village Colorado shopping center.

Police said the baby girl is in stable condition at Memorial Hospital.

Crimes Against Children detectives are working the scene and are interviewing a handful of residents of the apartment complex. They are trying to find surveillance video, and are checking for birth records at local hospitals.

Colorado's Safe Haven law allows parents to hand over an infant up to 72-hours old to a fire station or hospital.  If the baby is unharmed, the parent will not be prosecuted for abandonment.
