COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers said one person died in a motorcycle crash in southwest Colorado Springs Thursday morning.

According to officers, a car hit the motorcycle at the intersection of Cheyenne Road and Lake Avenue around 11:30 a.m.

The rider died.

Eastbound traffic on Lake Avenue was being rerouted to Venetucci Boulevard at Cheyenne Road, and westbound traffic at Lake was stopped at I-25.

All roads have since reopened.

Officers haven't released any names or information about the crash yet.

Thursday's accident is the latest in a string of fatalities that made El Paso County the highest in the state for motorcycle fatalities last year.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation in 2011 there were 43 vehicular fatalities in the county, 14 of which involved a motorcycle.

There is no definite reason why the county's numbers were high but our long ride season does play a factor.

"The great weather we have, we do see a lot of riders out and we do have a higher number of fatalities.  I believe we had four motorcycle fatalities last weekend alone in the state," Heather Halpape, spokesperson with the Colorado Dept. of Transportation said.

The accidents are so prevalent CDOT has reached out out riders and local drivers with a campaign called "Live To Ride."
