COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- While the investigation continues into the Aurora theater shooting, local gun clubs are seeing more members.

Whistling Pines Gun Club said their average weekend membership tripled this past weekend.

The numbers go hand-in-hand with data from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations which showed more than 1,200 background checks for gun purchases were conducted the Friday of the shooting, 300 more than the week before.

"It's one thing to be a target but another to have a chance to fire back and stop the nonsense," Robert Holmes, the Whistling Pine Gun Club owner, said.

More and more women are registering for gun club cards. Of the approximately 2,000 members of Whistling Pines Gun Club, 25 percent are women.

One woman was with her two young girls giving them lessons in gun safety.

"We didn't want them growing up thinking only bad things happen with guns," Meghan Workmann, a gun club member, said.

Those lessons will hopefully keep them aware and better prepared if ever caught in the middle of a deadly situation.
