COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Cheyenne Mountain Zoo officials welcomed the newest member of its family Tuesday, a 148-pound giraffe.
The giraffe, which has not yet been named in keeping with zoo tradition of waiting 30 days, is mother Uzuri's fourth birth. He is the 195th giraffe born at the zoo since 1954.
One of the things the zoo is known for is its giraffe feeding exhibit, where zoogoers can feed 21 of the giraffes. The baby is expected to be let outside later this week.
The baby giraffe was born at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, and both he and the mother are healthy and active.
Zookeepers also collected the first giraffe calf hoof print for a giveaway. The first 50 visitors to the African Rift Valley feeding hut each day from July 13-29 who mention the promotion get to take home a hoof print.
Visitors can also win a private meet and greet with the baby giraffe. Sign ups will be at the feeding hut between 9 and 11:45 a.m. each day from July 13-29. The winner will be announced at noon each day and will get VIP access to the giraffe barn.
