EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- Pikes Peak United Way officials announced Friday they have collected more than $500,000 in donations for victims of the Waldo Canyon Fire.

The Waldo Canyon Fire Victims Assistance Fund is set up to help those who were evacuated or may need to rebuild.

“During the past 10 days, local agencies and organizations – as well as thousands of local residents – have stepped up to help meet the immediate needs of those affected by the fire,” Pikes Peak United Way President and CEO JD Dallager said in a statement. “However, during the coming months, additional intermediate and long-term assistance will be required to help both individuals and families rebuild their homes – and their lives. The intent of the Waldo Canyon Fire Victim Assistance Fund is to help in this transition.”

Victims don't have access to the money yet and will have to apply for it in the coming weeks and months.

“As previously stated all funds will stay local to the Pikes Peak region, helping our friends and neighbors who have been affected by the fire,” Dallager said. “There are numerous worthwhile charities that are working toward rebuilding the community, and we encourage everyone to contribute in any way they can, be it monetarily or by volunteering.”
