COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A 14-year-old boy from Colorado Springs has advanced to the world Yo-Yo championships in Orlando, Fla. in August.
Jake Trookman will represent the U.S. Aug 2-4.
The World Yo-Yo Contest feature more than 200 players from 22 different countries completing in one of six divisions divided by Yo-Yo styles. The Divisions are Single A, Double A, Triple A, Off-String, Counter-Weight and Artistic Performance and involve up to two Yo-Yos and a variation of string movements.
Competitors begin in state contests. State winners advance to regional tournaments, and those winners advance to the U.S. bracket. Trookman advanced through the national tournament to compete in Orlando.
The contest started 80 years ago in London, and 28 countries use the same qualifying system. Fans can watch the three-day event at the Rozen Plaza Hotel for $47-67.
The price of a high-quality competition Yo-Yo is around $400.
Winners can receive up to $750 in prize money per division.
