COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers were able to make two arrests Monday after citizens saw the suspects driving stolen cars.
Around 10:44 a.m., a man saw his friend's Jeep being driven by someone he didn't recognize. The man called officers to report the theft and followed the Jeep at a safe distance near the 700 block of South 8th Street until officers were able to find it. The driver, 40-year-old Kenneth Buck, and the passenger, 43-year-old Tracy Halley, both fled the Jeep after parking it into an industrial alley in the 00 block of West Las Vegas Street.
Both were caught shortly after running away, but officers only had evidence to arrest Buck.
Around 1:19 p.m., another person saw a car in the area of South 23rd Street and West Vermijo Avenue he thought was stolen. He called officers, then detained the driver, who turned out to be Halley, until they arrived.
Officers said the car had been stolen from an auto repair business earlier in the day. They also found several items in the Jeep after they recovered it.
Buck will be charged with motor vehicle theft and Halley will be charged with theft by receiving.
