EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- Fire departments from Hanover, Edison, Tri-County, CSU Wildland Team and El Paso County's Wildland Team spent Sunday afternoon battling a grass fire near Whittemore Road and Myers Road in eastern El Paso County.
"The high winds have been a real problem. We were really glad that it stopped here by this road, but still trying to keep some embers from getting anything started," Medical Capt. Ed Vesser said.
Fire officials said the fire was contained at 80 acres, but officials said the 60 mph winds continued to rekindle hot spots and burned wood in the home.
"All the grass, the vegetation, the fuels, anywhere around yards is extremely dry and brittle and it doesn't take anything to ignite it right now," Edison Fire Chief Mark Anderson said. "When you have downed power lines like what it appears to have started here, they can have some pretty substantial ignition and doesn't take very much to start it right now."
One vacant home is considered a total loss after becoming completely engulfed by the flames; two other structures were scorched.
"The way the winds are going, it just keeps rekindling everything," Anderson said. "We're going to have to dismantle the wood [in the house] to get it down low inside the structure. We can get that wood stuff in the building away from all this wind and maybe get it knocked down."
