COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The year 2011 brought some incredible extremes across the lower 48 of the U.S. It was a year marked by devastating wildfires, deadly tornadoes, devastating drought and widespread flooding.

There were 14 weather events that caused at least $1 billion in damages, which is a record number. For Colorado, however, the severe weather season was quite tame overall. However, the summer of 2011 went down as the warmest on record for Colorado Springs.

For a full list of data and explanation of the weather phenomena, go to NOAA's latest 2011 report.

(By the way, the only state in the lower 48 of the U.S. to NOT record a temperature of 100 degrees or more in 2011 was Vermont.)
