COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Army is cutting back.

Wednesday U.S. officials announced the Army is planning to slash its number of combat brigades from 45 to as low as 32 and "broadly restructure" its fighting force.

They said the move is an effort to save money and trim the size of the service by around 80,000 soldiers.

The cuts come as the Pentagon works to finalize its 2013 fiscal year budget, which must reflect about $260 billion in savings over five years.

Officials at Fort Carson said they do not know how the cuts will affect the Mountain Post.

Currently Fort Carson is home to four combat brigades under the 4th Infantry Division, each totaling about 3,500 soldiers.

As for recruiting, the Army's Denver office said they are also not sure how the new numbers will affect them and added for fiscal year 2012 their recruitment goal was nine percent less.

The Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce is keeping a close eye on the budget cuts as well.

But, officials there said with the addition of the new aviation combat brigade, the Mountain Post and the local economy is in a "good position."

A timeline for the cuts has not been released.
