COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The new year is right around the corner, which mean thousands of people around the world will be celebrating - and those celebrations usually involve alcohol.
To make sure no one drinks and drives on New Year's Eve, there are a few options for partygoers to get a safe and free ride home.
One option is available thanks to the National Homeland Defense (NHDF) and a generous grant they gave to another nonprofit in Colorado Springs.
In November, the Designated Driver of Colorado Springs, which offers people and their cars a free ride home, had to temporarily close its doors due to a lack of funding and loss of sponsors. When the NHDF heard the program had to put the brakes on its services, they provided it with enough temporary funding to get it back on the road.
"We were disappointed when we heard the Designated Driver weren't going to be available anymore," Don Addy, president of the NHDF said. "So I called Nonie and told her how we wanted to get it on its feet again, at least for the New Year's Eve weekend."
Nonie Rispin, executive director for the Designated Driver of Colorado Springs, said she was so excited when she received the call from Addy.
"I've told Don a couple of times," she said, "that he's our Christmas miracle."
The grant will allow the program to offer its services the weekend of New Year's Eve, but only for Fort Carson soldiers.
"Of course we want to get back to the point where we can provide rides to everyone," Rispin said.
Rispin said soldiers are the program's top customers. This year alone, Designated Driver has provided more than 5,000 rides, 83 percent of which were Fort Carson soldiers. She said providing services to them this upcoming weekend is the program's way of giving back to those who serve our country.
"I feel like it is the least thing we can do for them," she said. "So that we can protect them the same way they protect us."
However, with the new year comes new hope. Addy said the NHDF hopes to find more funding for the program he believes is vital to the community.
"After the first of the year," Addy said, "we're going to work with Nonie and others to try to develop permanent funding for her so she can be back in business."
The Designated Driver will be available for Fort Carson soldiers Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Those in need can call (719) 650-3450.
The McDivitt Law Firm is also offering a safe ride home for those celebrating this weekend.
This year the firm will continue its Safe and Sober Cab Ride Home program where they will pay for the Yellow Cab ride for those in need in Colorado Springs. To get a ride from Yellow Cab, call 777-7777 between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. beginning New Year's Eve.
